The Art of Painting - The Art of Painting, also known as The Allegory of Painting, Die Allegorie der Malerei or Painter in his Studio, is a famous 17th century oil on canvas painting by Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. Many art experts believe that the work of art is an allegory of painting, hence the alternate title of the painting.
Shaped canvas - Shaped canvas paintings are done on canvas in a shape other than the traditional rectangle. This may be more traditionally done by creating a different edge form and retaining a flat painting surface, as in a rondo made on a circular stretcher or panel, or less traditionally by moving the surface by stuffing or padding the surface, or stretching the canvas across a shaped stretcher.
Action painting - Action painting, sometimes called "gestural abstraction", is a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the canvas, rather than being carefully applied. The resulting work emphasizes the physical act of painting itself.
Panel painting - A Panel painting was a painting support medium in popular use in the West for about 300 years, from the late 12th century until the 16th century, after which canvas and oil paint became the norm. A "panel" was created from wood with a chalk mixture layered on top to form a solid, smooth surface, not unlike ivory, and was then painted using an egg-yolk based paint.
